About Speaker

Mariette Van Niekerk
Deloitte

Mariette leads the Data Science & AI practice of Deloitte New Zealand’s Risk Advisory team, using a variety of AI technologies to detect and manage fraud and operational risks. She specialised in both the use of AI for Risk Management, and the risk that AI introduces (Trustworthy AI).

She is an experienced lead data scientist, with a 15-year track record delivering operations research and AI solutions across a variety of industries (Financial Services, Public Sector, Energy, Retail, CPG, TMT). Her experience spans three continents – she started her career in Cape Town (South Africa), and spent four years in London before moving to New Zealand in 2019. Examples of the work she and her team currently do include: Automated document analysis, AI risk management  (e.g. model validation, bias detection), AI-driven outlier detection, and Predictive modelling (e.g. machine learning to model employee churn).
