OPINION: We received a wake-up call close to home this week and hopefully one or two people noticed.
We’re spending our holidays between Nelson and Christchurch this year. On New Year’s Day Christchurch was shrouded in a misty haze as the South Island’s typically blue vistas filled with smoke blown across the Tasman from ever spreading Australian bushfires. By Thursday morning you could smell the smoke in the air.
As temperatures in the city soared to the highest in the country at 31 degrees, you could feel the heat from the sun, but you certainly couldn’t see it.
