Unvaccinated people are 25 times more likely to be hospitalised for Covid-19 – and about three times more likely to contract the virus – than those who’ve had both doses of the Pfizer shot.
That’s according to new modelling by a researcher who simulated a pandemic scenario similar to Auckland’s Delta outbreak to combat claims on social media about the vaccine’s effectiveness.
Large clinical trials have shown protection against symptomatic Covid-19 to be around 52 per cent at about 12 days after the first dose of the Pfizer shot – but 95 per cent after the second dose, of which about 84 per cent of eligible Kiwis have now received.
