Workers allowed back underground at Pike River Mine after carcinogens found

Underground work has resumed at the West Coast’s Pike River Mine after workers were pulled out when carcinogens were detected in the mine.

Work was suspended on August 11 when the team working underground found an “unusual substance” on the walls and roof of the tunnel and took samples.

The samples came back positive for the presence of carcinogens.
