Brown sugar returning to NZ supermarkets after recalls over lead contamination

Relief is in sight for bakers as brown sugar begins to return to supermarket shelves following a spate of recalls.

On November 4, NZ Sugar (Chelsea Sugar) announced a recall of soft brown and raw sugar sold under the Chelsea, Woolworths and Pams brands because of low-level lead contamination.

Two further recalls followed in November after Woolworths NZ and Foodstuffs South Island mistakenly restocked the product, and a fourth recall of about 8000 packets of Woolworths raw sugar was announced in December.
