Fletcher Building is hoping a new initiative will stop 3 million used tyres a year being sent to landfills, and instead use them in cement manufacturing.
The Ministry for the Environment part funded the $25 million project at Golden Bay Cement, with a grant of $16m awarded through its Waste Minimisation Fund.
Environment Minister David Parker was at the opening of the upgraded cement plant in Whangārei on Tuesday.
