The Government is facing mounting pressure to rescue stranded New Zealanders and at-risk Afghans from the Taliban’s grip.

Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta was on Thursday sent an open letter signed by more than 30 organisations, including World Vision, Oxfam, Afghan community and Christian groups, urging the Government to increase its humanitarian support and offers of refuge as a crisis in Afghanistan deepens.

The Government has been in a holding pattern since a hastily arranged airlift effort that helped evacuate more than 300 New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, and visa holders ended in late August, and possibly left more than 400 behind in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.
