High-risk North Canterbury highway gets $3.5 million safety boost

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) hopes new rumble strips, safety barriers, signage and bridge barrier upgrades on a stretch of North Canterbury highway will make the road safer.

The $3.5 million project was carried out on State Highway 7 between Waipara and Waikari, including along Weka Pass, where one fatal and 12 serious injury crashes were recorded between 2008 and 2018.

The project is part of the Safe Network Programme, which aims to prevent up to 160 deaths and serious injuries across New Zealand’s highest risk state highways and local roads every year.
