Scientists set to discover secrets of past earthquakes by digging down deep at Cape Palliser

Scientists are laying bare the secrets of past natural disasters, with the digging of several huge pits along the south Wairarapa coast.

The work is part of It’s Our Fault, a project funded by the Earthquake Commission (EQC), Wellington City Council, and Wellington Region Emergency Management Office, intent on discovering the details of previous earthquakes and tsunamis.

The Wellington region is riven by a number of active faults, and at risk of tsunamis in its harbour. The information will help scientists better understand future risks.
