Waikato DHB scrambles to contain cyber attack, safety of patient data unclear

Health Minister Andrew Little says the Government will not pay a ransom as the crippled Waikato District Health Board scrambles to resurrect its hacked IT systems.

“The New Zealand Government will not pay ransoms to criminals because this will encourage further offending,” Little said.

There is little clarity about how damaging last week’s cyber attack was – or could yet become – and Little’s comment came as he acknowledged the alleged hackers had made contact with media outlets.
